It’s snowing. In April. For the first time in history, I am not excited. Why? Because I just bought and planted a crapload of shrubs and perennials a few days ago.
It’s supposed to get down to around 22ËšF the next 3 nights so my question is this: If I put plastic and sheets/blankets over my plants, are they gonna die? One of ya’ll is bound to know the answer. Better yet, does anyone have any better ideas? I put stakes under the plastic so it doesn’t smash the plants and then I put blankets or sheets over the plastic. Good idea? Bad idea? Help, please.

I think that’s the best thing you can do, aside from plastic. I think they’d be okay for a night of cold… but three nights, ugh. Plants are pretty resiliant, though.

Some plants are tougher than others, so it depends on the plant species. Many but not all trees and shrubs actually have “backup” leaves in case the first set goes through a killing freeze, some have up to three sets. So if the first set of leaves gets frozen, the next set will be ok unless they sprout and another frost comes along after they have sprouted. You have done about all you can do to help them through. Since some of your plants are on the south side of the house and close to the house that will help them stay warmer also.

That’s what you get for being a pansy-ass and picking up gardening as a hobby!
Wumped!

Thanks to Seth and Ed. No thanks to B-rad. I was gonna say something along the lines of, “It’s not gardening, it’s curb appeal and therefore, an investment.” But then I realized that you’re right. It is gardening. And I am a wuss. What a sad realization. Sort of. Now that I think about it, I don’t know what’s sadder: That I’m gardening or that I’m not sad about realizing I am gardening. Ugh…
