Time for a new computer (ugh)

Apple, Tech Add comments

We’re back from Miami and the honeymoon was great. Mostly it was filled with tons of forced relaxation which I didn’t even realize how much I needed. I feel pretty good. Overall, the wedding was a tremendous success, thanks to my wife (that’s the first time I’ve used that word either typed, written or spoken) and all my wonderful friends/family.

What I am not excited about is the fact that I need a new computer…pronto. I have been pretty spoiled over the last few years. The company I used to work for provided me with computers (good ones) and before that, my Dad bought me a Powerbook (good one). When I left my last job, I turned in my computer and since then I have pieced together (literally) a bunch of parts and have been hobbling along with this awful feeling of knowing that the junkheap in my room will soon give out.

And last night it did. So the money that Sarah and I were so excited to put towards our new bathroom and ChillZone (different story) shall now go to straight into the hands of the nearest Apple Store…unless someone can convince me to finance it using the little “Or as low as $29/month!” option underneath the price on their website.

So here’s my question: Have any of you ever done that and how did it work out? Was it worth it? Seth? Tim? Anyone? Thanks.

Welcome back. Great Wedding! Great Party! Great Coouple!
Everyone is just so proud of you two.

As fer computers, my 2 cents are

When I got Sarah her last HP a few years ago, I bought it on credit, and it took a long time and a lot of interest to pay off. It was what I need to do at the time to get her on a new computer, but as soon as I could, I went ahead and paid it off. That ol’ interest is just the devil’s rent. It’s like watching your money melt. I hate it. Still, sometimes that’s what you need to do to get where you need to be.
You need a good computer. It makes so maany things so much easier. Every time I get a new one, I try to grab as much computer as I can, because I know in a short while, I’ll need it to do things I haven’t even conceived of yet. Make sure you quiz Apple about it’s video capabilities, because they tend lead everyone to think anyone with any level of Mac can edit video like the big boys, and it just ain’t necessarily so. I-movie is great, and works for a lot of things, but it’s just not meant to edit several layers of video at professional level.
Anyway,I’m glad you guys made it back safe. Keep us posted on what’s gong on.

Man, I’m with the Don. By the time you pay that baby off you could have bought three with the money you put into intrest. If you’ve got the cash, and you have to have the computer, then I would just buy it with cash. You’ll end up saving so much money.

the Don and Tim make good points. Interest on computer buying sucks. I wouldn’t do it unless I used one of my personal credit cards and transferred the balance to a 0% offer and made bigger payments than necessary. One place you might find a good deal is at Nebraska Furniture Mart or Best Buy — they’re always pushing some crazy no interest deal until 2010 (or something). You know exactly what you need, so you don’t have to rely on their ineptitude.

You could also get a bank loan with a much reduced interest to pay it off, too. But I think the best option would be to pay for it out-right if you can… or… do like most businesses do and lease one. But then you’re stuck paying for a computer that’s not yours — the only positive, when it’s time to get a new machine, you get a new machine and you’re not stuck using your PowerBook that you got in the year 2002 (ahem).

Find something low-interest and get ya something new.
