Wanna see Sweeney Todd? For Free?

Fayetteville/NWA No Comments »

The Fayetteville Flyer has a cool contest running right now. It’s the first one, actually.

It sorta has to do with the plot of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in that you just leave a comment explaining what the grossest thing is you’ve ever found in your food. Doing so gets you automatically entered to win 2 tickets to see the performance at the Walton Arts Center on November 17th.

Check it out, won’tcha?

The Fayetteville Flyer launched a few days ago. Bookmark that dude because it’s gonna be a great place to go for local and local-related information/opinions. It’s brand new so the content is a little light right now but it’s growing fast.

Make sure you check it often to keep up with Fayetteville’s only “100% Accurate Weather Center”.

BBBBQ is here, literally.

You know how I knew Bikes Blues & BBQ had begun? Well, I looked out my window this morning, that’s how. What’s so weird about that?

Let’s see. How about the fact that we don’t live anywhere near Dickson Street (official location of the rally)? Or the fact that we live on a circle drive that sits among dozens of other non-outlet streets? Normally, the only traffic we ever see in front of our house is from the few neighbors that live next door. You see, our house is near the end of the circle so if you’re driving by, you either live next door or you’re lost.

At 7am, there were bikes just rolling by. Where were they headed? I’ll tell you where: Right back where they came from! Hence the circle drive! I can only assume they’re a part of an elitist biker gang that is not satisfied with just being at one of the largest rallies in the world. Nope, I figure these dudes have to be everywhere at one of the largest rallies in the world. In other words, until they cruise through every inch of pavement in Fayetteville, their journey is not complete.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t hate BBBBQ. In fact, I really like that my city hosts such a interestingly large event. It never ceases to amaze me, though.

This year, city officials are expecting over 400,000 motorcycles to descend upon us. I suppose with that many bikers driving around, some of them are bound to end up doing circles on N. Maxwell Drive. Maybe I shouldn’t be so surprised afterall.

I just hope I don’t walk in on one taking a leak in my bathroom sometime this weekend.

NAMA 2007

Fayetteville/NWA, Music No Comments »

nama07.jpgThis year’s NAMA nominees have been announced and it’s time for ya’ll NW Arkansas folks to go vote, if ya wanna.

Although giving awards for musicians is pretty silly when you think about it, I still get ticked every year when some dopey band wins over a genuinely talented group. I guess I always have hope, though, that someday the actual good bands will win. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes they do, just not very often.

Anyway, head on over there and have your say. You don’t have to vote for every category (trust me, you won’t want to) and at the very least, you could just vote for Cory if you don’t have much time.

This is what 6-10 inches of snow looks like.

Fayetteville/NWA, Snow 6 Comments »

If you know me, you know how ticked I get when the weatherman is wrong (always). Especially when the prediction is for snow.

Growing up in Fayetteville will really spoil the whole snow thing for you (at least it did for me) because the weathermen around here are always predicting these huge amounts of snow that never accumulate to much of anything.

Every year it’s the same old thing. Some “crazy winter storm” is always coming our way and everyone freaks out and gets all pumped just to wake up to about a half inch of dust on the streets. This year is getting off to the same old start. Click on the picture above to marvel at the sight of what “6-10 inches of snow” looks like at my house.

Don’t get me wrong, though. I am thankful for even the smallest amount of snow. I love snow. Alot. I just wish they’d say, “Look ya’ll, we’re not gonna get much, but we will at least be able to wake up to a very pretty, half-inch coat of snow on our town.”

Yes, I am almost 30 years old and still complaining about snow like a 2nd grader. Pathetic, really.

ESPN is comin’ to town

Fayetteville/NWA, Razorbacks, Sports 1 Comment »

gameday.jpgI’d heard rumors that ESPN’s College GameDay might be coming to Fayetteville next Saturday but now it’s a reality according to HogWired.

The show has never made a stop in Fayetteville before so it’s pretty cool that they’ll be here for the Tennessee game at 6pm (ESPN2).

Now the only question is where will they set up? Lot 42? The Hog Trough?

Best of NWA 2006Citiscapes Magazine will soon be publishing their annual Best of Northwest Arkansas awards and there is a new category this year: Best Gourmet Dessert.

It just so happens that I know the owner of the best gourmet desserts company in Northwest Arkansas. What luck! If you aren’t familiar with Darling Desserts, then just take my word on it and head over to BestofNWAR.com to cast your vote. While you’re there, you can also vote for the seemingly hundreds of other categories but it’s not necessary to vote for all of ‘em.

I recently designed the Darling Desserts logo so if for no other reason just vote because you like me.

Ya’ll do like me, right?

The Springdale Wranglers?

Fayetteville/NWA, Sports 6 Comments »

bball.jpgFrom the looks of it, Springdale is one step closer to getting a minor league baseball team. The details seem a little fuzzy as of right now but apparently, the team they’re courting is the Wichita Wranglers, who are an AA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.

GrandSlamForSpringdale.com has plenty of information if you’re interested. I haven’t done a whole lot of research so I don’t really have too much of an opinion at this point but it seems kinda sweet I guess. I can’t really see any reason why there shouldn’t be a minor league baseball team in Springdale, but then again, I can’t really see any reason why there should be one there either.

Springdale’s a fairly ugly town and everyone around here knows about the smell it can’t seem to shake so bringing in a baseball team seems kinda weird but then again, I suppose anything it can do to cover those things up can’t really hurt.

What do ya’ll think?

Adios Chief Meteorologist Charles Salser

Fayetteville/NWA 7 Comments »

Thanks to Lacy for the heads-up on this one.

Although I have a pretty firm opinion about meteorologists, I’m not a Charles Salser hater by any means. But after hearing that the strangest weatherman I’ve ever seen was leaving KHOG 40/29 to become a pastor, I had to let ya’ll know. Apparently, he’s accepted a position as Lifegroups Pastor for LifeChurch in Oklahoma City. According to his goodbye letter, Charles “will be working for the people just like I have here at 40/29, only this time trying to keep them safe from the storms of life.” Genius.

While looking for a picture of ole Salser, I discovered this blog post which has some serious pro-Salser/anti-Salser commentary including one guy who claims that Mr. Salser will correct you if you don’t call him “Chief Meteorologist Charles Salser.” Incredible.

Fayetteville in the NY Times

A fast-growing college town of 62,000 in the Ozark foothills, Fayetteville is flush with youth, culture and natural beauty — especially in spring, when the redbuds and dogwoods are in bloom and the University of Arkansas students emerge to frolic in the warm weather. Get there before it’s too hot to hike the lush, forested trails that braid the area. Stroll through the leafy campus and holler “Woooooooooo, Pig! Sooie!” at the 72,000-seat Reynolds Razorback Stadium (but beware: hotels are already booked for the fall football season). Soak up the atmosphere that entranced a young Bill Clinton. Then wind your way down lively Dickson Street, a former strip of dive bars that has gotten a good scrubbing.

NAMA 2006

Fayetteville/NWA, Music 1 Comment »

It’s time once again for the Northwest Arkansas Music Awards (NAMA) and as always, lots of great local bands are nominated along with lots of terrible ones as well. As I’ve said before, it’s very rare that any of the good bands actually win the awards. If you get a chance, head on over to the NAMA voting page and enter your votes for the year’s best bands. You don’t have to vote in all the categories and if you are in a hurry you could just vote for the band I am playing with which is called The Good Fear. Thanks, ya’ll.

I Love Fayetteville

Fayetteville/NWA 2 Comments »

There are a million reasons why I love this place. One of them is definitely the crazy weather we have here. Take a look below at what Sarah was greeted with while checking the forecast. In case you can’t tell, it says High: 76º Low: 23º Snow Showers. Where else does it go from nearly 80º down to 20º and begin to snow without freaking everyone out?

Clunk Records (1995-2005)

Fayetteville/NWA, Music No Comments »

After nearly ten years of serving up the best in independent label music, Clunk Records is closing it’s doors for good and I am partially to blame. When Charlie called me the other day to ask if I would come up with one final Clunk t-shirt design because December is the last month that the store would be open, I felt my stomache nearly drop to my knees.
I buy all of my CDs from Clunk Records but that’s not the problem. The problem is I can’t remember the last time I actually bought a CD. And it’s people like me who have contributed to the end of a decade-long run of one of the best music stores ever.

There’s a whole slew of topics that arise when considering buying CDs vs. downloading but for me, I am kind of surprised at how much I have adopted the latter, given my possibly abnormal passion for music. I was always the first to argue against the iTunes music store when the topic arose. My main concerns were that when downloading music you don’t receive the artwork that came with the original CD, you don’t have the right to play the music on as many computers as you want to and you don’t even get full quality music because MP3s have been compressed to accomodate the need for a smaller file size. So why is it that I have all but completely dropped the habit of buying actual CDs?

I suppose it’s because all three of my main arguments against downloading MP3s are no longer issues for me. At some point in the last couple of years, I have become annoyed as hell with CDs. Much like vinyl records became a huge pain in the ass to store/carry/play, CDs have taken on the same pain, at least for me. And as for the booklet that I was so worried about, I have no idea why but I couldn’t care any less about looking through those things anymore. Maybe it’s because I am so much busier these days than I used to be or maybe it’s not me at all. Maybe things are just changing and that’s all there is to it.

As far as not being able to play your downloaded MP3s on as many computers as you’d like, I have already discussed the workaround for that issue and as amazing as it sounds, I don’t give a crap about MP3s being of a lesser quality than CDs. I’m sure it has something to do with just being used to hearing music at a lower quality but even if that’s the case, who cares?

I haven’t changed my habit of listening to music nearly non-stop, but I have definitely changed my means of acquiring and playing it. And with that change brings the downfall of things like CD players, small CD manufacturing companies and most unfortunately, small music stores like Clunk Records.

I’m not sure what else to say except that I am sorry Chris and Charlie and thank you for ten (eight) years of supplying me with music that has not only helped to change my life but also the lives of most of my friends and family.

It’s time once again for the Northwest Arkansas Music Awards (NAMA) and as always, lots of great local bands are nominated along with lots of terrible local bands. It’s very rare that any of the good bands actually win the awards. Sorry if I am offending anyone here. I could go on and on about why I think certain bands are good and why I think certain bands are awful but it’s a waste of my time and yours because if you’re reading this website, the chances are pretty good that you already know the difference between the two. If you get a chance, head on over to the NAMA voting page and enter your votes for this year’s best bands. You don’t have to vote in all the categories and if you are in a hurry you could just vote for the band I am playing with which is called The Good Fear. Thanks, ya’ll.
